Chapter 25
The men prepared to spend an uncomfortable night in the armored machines, glad to have their protection, but neither looking forward to trying to sleep in the seats. Neither wanted to leave any of their food or gear unprotected either, so they chose to sleep in the driverâs seats, further cramped by the steering wheels and shifters.
Jensen put some water on to boil, using almost exactly the same setup he had used to make coffee back in Columbus. After turning on the gas, he clicked the piezo ignitor and watched the orange and blue flame spring up. After adjusting the gas, he placed a small metal bowl of water on top of the burner. He went to his vehicle and grabbed two blue boxes of macaroni and cheese.
âWhy donât you have an MRE?â Daniel asked.
Jensen looked at him, verifying whether or not he was serious. âIâve had so many of them, but I havenât had mac and cheese in forever, how about you?â
Daniel shook his head. âNever had one.â
Careful to keep his face expressionless, Jensen told him, âSee if you can find one marked something like âchiliâ or âbeef patty.â The beef ones are generally the best.â Then he turned back to watch his water boil as Daniel went in search of an appropriate MRE. This was going to be a memorable event for both of them.
Jensenâs water boiled, and he poured both of the boxes of dried macaroni product into it, then turned to watch Daniel come back with a brown package. He was sniffing at it as he tore open the top. Jensen tried to peer at the label without seeming too curious, and saw that it ended in âpatty.â That would do. He looked at Daniel and said, âThe see-through green thing is your heater. You want to tear the top off and pour a tiny bit of water into it. Donât go over the second line on the bottom.
âThen find the entrée, which will be a green pouch inside of a brown cardboard box. Open the box, but not the green thing, and slide the pouch into the heater.â He watched as Daniel slid the pouch into the heater. âNow put the heater into the box from the entrée and prop it up against a rock or something,â he continued, using a phrase that had been around since a decade and a half before his birth.
âThat will warm up. In the meantime, you can break into those other packs. It looks like youâve got wheat bread, which is probably for the burger. Hopefully thereâs a cheese spread of some sort in there as well,â he casually mentioned. âIâd save the coffee for the morning, but there should be a chocolate protein powder or something in there as well.â
As he turned off the gas for his meal, he placed a knife blade against the lip of the metal pot and poured out some of the water, doing so several times until he appeared satisfied with the amount of water remaining.
